Baby showers are a celebration that the westerners just came up a few years ago. The friends of the expecting mother gather to shower her with fun and gifts, getting her all excited for the arrival of the baby into her life as they share their own experiences of motherhood and whatnot.
But we Indians have been doing it for centuries now.
Seemantham is more of a social and religious gathering than just a few friends getting together. It is a day when the entire world of the mother-to-be or every person she ever knew, all friends and relatives show up to bless her and the prenatal child a healthy life.
As the vedic tradition dictates, “Seemantham" refers to parting the hair just above the eyebrow where the Goddess of Wealth, Sri Mahalakshmi, resides. This lead to the practice of applying kumkum to the parting in order to propitiate the Goddess Sri Lakshmi such that when a woman delivers a child, she is considered the embodiment of the Goddess Lakshmi herself. So, the pregnant woman, who is considered the goddess Lakshmi herself celebrates her imminent child-birth with her kith and kin on her Seemantham.
The women adorn the expecting mother with beautiful bangles, apply the holy ‘Chandan’ and ‘kumkum’ all over her body to denote their blessings and bathe her in holy water.
It is a tradition that “Chithrannam” , a range of variety rices like sweet pongal, tamarind rice, pepper rice, sesame rice, lemon rice, raw mango rice, coriander rice, sambhar rice and curd rice to be served during this occasion- meaning every taste from sweet, sour, salt, spicy, bitter and umami are included in the diet of the pregnant woman to keep her taste buds happy and her health on check.
